Stitching Ghosts

An Exhibition of Textile Art
January 19 - March 10, 2024

Sea Islands Center Gallery
University of South Carolina, Beaufort

Stitching Ghosts is an exploration of my move to, and life in South Carolina for the past ten years.

The transition was inspiration for the Migration Series, Textile Topography and others. Over this time period, I realize that to feel at home here, I need to stay engaged with the landscape. I’ve dug into the layered history of this place, literally expanding my pigment palette with the rich ochres available at my doorstep.

Using plant materials to alter the colors of cloth, I grow my own dyes, and fiber crops in the tropical climate. Among these, Indigo and Sea Island Cotton, which are native to South Carolina, and embedded with a profound ancestry. Making from scratch adds intention to my work. Stitching the journey has grounded me in Southern soil and the stories it conjures.
